EFY you can get great patterns at the dollar store.Make sure to use the directions, after you are done carving, add water/vinegar to the flesh of the pumpkin, that way, it will last longer and no fungus will grow.You can also add some string lights inside your pumpkin and cut out a small whole in the back for the wire, so you can plug it in.
The picture above is of my first carving with a pattern, I enjoyed doing that with my little one.
